We decided to use the term Self Protection because the term Self Defence is negative. When you defend you are being attacked or giving ground, in other words, it's too late! When you protect you are being pro-active, taking the initiative before situations escalate.

The aim of the S.P.A. is to provide honest advice and a realistic and effective training syllabus against violent assault. The main reason why the traditional teaching methods used by many of the Self Defence/Martial Art instructors around today fail is that they concentrate solely on the combative aspect of training. The harsh reality is that although it is essential to train realistically, without the ability to see situations develop (‘being aware’) the likelihood is that a situation will deteriorate to such a degree that even the most accomplished fighter will struggle to survive or won’t know what happened until it’s all over.  Being a black belt or dan grade is no comfort if you get your face kicked in because you didn't see it coming.

Our main objective is not only to get the individual to become more aware so that they can spot situations before they become confrontational and take appropriate action but also to achieve this in as short a time scale as possible. 

For this reason the S.P.A. syllabus gives advice, guidance and realistic training relating to violent assault with the emphasis firmly on awareness and avoidance measures that are simple to perform under stressful conditions.

We regard this web site as part of a natural evolution in getting our message across.  If only one person learns just one new thing, takes away just one idea or maybe starts to re-think their approach to real self protection then all the effort has been worth it.  We are hoping you will take away a lot more than that.
